UK Visitor to Work Visa in 2026: The Lawful Way to Do It

You can't switch from a UK visitor visa to a work visa inside the UK. Here is what visitors can do, and how to apply for a work visa lawfully from abroad.

Updated Sep 16, 2026 · 9 min read

Key takeaways

  • GOV.UK says people on a visit visa can't switch to a Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, Student or Global Talent visa from inside the UK.
  • As a visitor you can attend job interviews and meetings, but you can't do paid or unpaid work for a UK company.
  • The lawful route is to leave the UK when your visit ends and apply for the right visa from abroad.
  • Most Skilled Worker jobs now need to be at degree level and pay at least £41,700 or the going rate, whichever is higher.
  • Care worker visas closed to new overseas applicants on 22 July 2025.

You are in the UK on a visit, you like what you see, and you start wondering whether you could just stay and work. It is one of the most common questions people ask. The honest answer is that you can't turn a visitor visa into a work visa from inside the UK, but there is a lawful way to get there.

This guide explains what visitors can and can't do, why in-country switching isn't allowed, and the step-by-step route to a UK work visa. Rules change often, so check GOV.UK before you act.

The short answer: you can't switch inside the UK

Earlier versions of this article suggested you could move from a visitor visa to a Student, Global Talent or other visa without leaving. That was wrong.

GOV.UK lists the visas you can't switch from if you are already in the UK. For the Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, Student and Global Talent routes, that list includes:

  • a visit visa
  • a short-term student visa
  • a Parent of a Child Student visa
  • a seasonal worker visa
  • a domestic worker in a private household visa
  • immigration bail, or permission to stay outside the Immigration Rules

GOV.UK's instruction is plain: if you are in one of these categories, you must leave the UK and apply from abroad.

Family routes have their own rules and very limited exceptions. If you have a British or settled partner, get advice from a regulated immigration adviser rather than assuming you can apply from inside the UK.

What you can and can't do as a visitor

A Standard Visitor visa costs £135 for up to 6 months, according to GOV.UK. You can usually stay for up to 6 months per visit.

The visitor rules are built around one idea: you are here to visit, not to live or work. Here is how that plays out.

ActivityAllowed as a visitor?Notes
Tourism and visiting familyYesThe core purpose of the visa
Attending job interviewsYesPermitted under general business activities
Meetings, conferences and seminarsYesIncluding negotiating and signing contracts
Researching employers and sectorsYesNetworking and gathering information is fine
Recreational courses up to 30 daysYesLonger study has separate rules
Paid work for a UK companyNoUnless it is a permitted paid engagement
Unpaid work, trial shifts or "volunteering" in a real jobNoUnpaid work still counts as work
Work placements or internshipsNoNot a permitted activity
Self-employment or gig work in the UKNoDelivery apps and cash-in-hand jobs included

The permitted activities appendix also allows limited volunteering for a registered charity, for up to 30 days. That doesn't cover filling a role an employee would normally do.

Why working on a visit visa is a serious mistake

It can be tempting to take a few paid shifts "just to cover costs". Don't.

Working in breach of your conditions can lead to your permission being cancelled, removal from the UK and refusals of future applications. Overstaying can also affect whether you can come back, sometimes for years. A refusal record follows you, because most UK visa forms ask about previous breaches.

Employers who hire you illegally also face penalties, so a genuine sponsor will not risk it.

The lawful route: visit, leave, apply from abroad

The good news is that a visit can still be useful. You can meet employers, attend interviews and understand the job market. You just need to apply for your work visa the right way.

Step-by-step

  1. Check your job is eligible on the GOV.UK table of eligible occupations before you spend money.
  2. Look for employers on the GOV.UK register of licensed sponsors.
  3. Attend interviews during your visit if they fall in your trip, but don't start work.
  4. Get a written job offer and a certificate of sponsorship (CoS), the reference number your sponsor assigns.
  5. Leave the UK before your visit permission ends.
  6. Prepare your evidence, including your English test result and bank statements if you need to show savings.
  7. Apply online from outside the UK and prove your identity at a visa application centre or through the app.
  8. Wait for a decision. GOV.UK says this is usually within 3 weeks when applying from outside the UK.
  9. Travel and start work only from the start date on your visa.

If your visit is ending and you have an offer

This is the situation that pushes people into mistakes, so plan for it.

  • Don't overstay while you wait. An employer who genuinely wants you will usually hold the role while you apply from home.
  • Ask for a realistic start date that allows time to leave, gather documents and get a decision.
  • Get the offer in writing, including job title, occupation code, salary and weekly hours. You'll need these details to check the visa rules.
  • Don't start work for your new employer before your visa is granted, not even unpaid, remote or "just training".
  • Keep your travel records, such as boarding passes, to show you left on time.

If you already have a job and permission to stay in another category, such as a Student visa, different switching rules may apply. Check the "switch to this visa" page for the route you want.

Skilled Worker visa: what it takes in 2026

The Skilled Worker visa is the main route for people with a UK job offer. The requirements tightened on 22 July 2025, when the skill threshold was raised to degree level (RQF level 6, where RQF means the Regulated Qualifications Framework).

At the time of writing, GOV.UK says you need:

RequirementWhat GOV.UK says
EmployerA UK employer approved by the Home Office
Certificate of sponsorshipIssued by your employer for your specific job
JobOn the eligible occupations list as "higher skilled", or on the immigration salary list or temporary shortage list if medium skilled
SalaryUsually at least £41,700 a year or the going rate for the job, whichever is higher
Reduced salarySome applicants may qualify at £33,400 or more, for example in certain listed jobs
EnglishLevel B2 on the CEFR scale for new applicants
Savings£1,270 for 28 days, unless your employer certifies your maintenance

The temporary shortage list for medium-skilled jobs was set up as an interim measure. The government said it would run until the end of 2026, with separate arrangements for adult social care. Check whether a job is still listed at the time you apply.

Workers sponsored in medium-skilled jobs on these lists can't bring dependants under the July 2025 rules.

Health and care workers

Nurses, midwives and other registered health professionals can apply for the Health and Care Worker visa, which has lower fees and no health surcharge. Care worker and senior care worker visas closed to new overseas applicants on 22 July 2025.

Other routes, and whether visitors can use them

RouteJob offer needed? Can you switch from a visit visa inside the UK?
Skilled WorkerYesNo, apply from abroad
Health and Care WorkerYesNo, apply from abroad
StudentNo, but you need a course offerNo, apply from abroad
Global TalentNo, but most people need an endorsementNo, apply from abroad
Partner or spouseNoGenerally no, with very limited exceptions

The Global Talent visa is for leaders or potential leaders in fields such as academia, research, arts, culture and digital technology. GOV.UK lists a total cost of £766 if you apply with an endorsement, split into £561 for the endorsement stage and £205 for the visa.

A Student visa can lead to other options after graduation, but it is a study route with its own costs, work limits and rules. Don't choose it only as a back door to work.

Costs and money

Budget for the full cost before you commit. These are GOV.UK figures for Skilled Worker applications from outside the UK.

CostAmount (per person)
Visa fee, up to 3 years£819
Visa fee, more than 3 years£1,618
Visa fee for immigration salary list jobs£628 up to 3 years, £1,235 for longer
Immigration health surchargeUsually £1,035 per year
Savings evidence£1,270, unless exempt

The surcharge adds up fast. A 3-year visa for one adult means £3,105 in surcharge alone, on top of the visa fee. Partners and children pay their own fees and surcharge.

Also plan for an English test, flights, a rental deposit and your first month's rent before your first payday. Once you arrive, you'll need a UK bank account for your salary. Income tax is collected through payroll, and the standard personal allowance for 2026/27 is £12,570.

The Immigration Skills Charge and the certificate of sponsorship are employer costs. An employer should never pass these on to you.

Scams to avoid

Visa fraud targets people who are already in the UK and running out of time. Watch for:

  • "We can convert your visitor visa" offers. No one can override the Immigration Rules.
  • Paying for a sponsorship certificate or job offer. A genuine sponsor doesn't sell jobs.
  • "Work while you wait" arrangements that ask you to start before your visa is granted.
  • Advisers who aren't regulated. Check anyone giving immigration advice is registered, for example with the Immigration Advice Authority.
  • Fake employers that don't appear on the register of licensed sponsors.

Your next-steps checklist

  • Stay within the visitor rules: interviews and meetings are fine, work is not
  • Check your occupation code and salary against the GOV.UK Skilled Worker rules
  • Confirm your employer is a licensed sponsor
  • Book an approved English test if you need one
  • Leave the UK before your visit ends
  • Budget for the visa fee, health surcharge, savings evidence and relocation
  • Apply from outside the UK and wait for your decision before you start work
  • Use only regulated immigration advisers, and never pay for a job

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my UK visitor visa to a work visa without leaving the UK?

Generally, no. GOV.UK lists visit visas among the visas you can't switch from for the Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, Student and Global Talent routes. You must leave and apply from outside the UK.

Can I attend a job interview in the UK as a visitor?

Yes. The visitor rules allow you to attend meetings, conferences and interviews. You can't start working, even unpaid, until you have a visa that allows it.

Can I do a trial shift or unpaid work experience on a visitor visa?

No. The visitor rules don't allow paid or unpaid work for a UK company, work placements or filling a role. A 'trial shift' is work, even if nobody pays you.

How much does a Skilled Worker visa cost from outside the UK?

At the time of writing, GOV.UK lists £819 for up to 3 years or £1,618 for longer, with lower fees for jobs on the immigration salary list. Most applicants also pay the immigration health surcharge of £1,035 per year.

How long does a Skilled Worker visa decision take from abroad?

GOV.UK says you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks of applying from outside the UK and proving your identity. It can take longer if your case needs extra checks.

Is it true that some agents can switch my visitor visa for a fee?

No legitimate adviser can override the Immigration Rules. If someone promises an in-country switch from a visit visa to a work visa for a fee, treat it as a scam.
