Housekeeping Jobs in Brisbane: 2026 Award Pay and Rights
What Brisbane hotel housekeepers and cleaners really earn under Australian awards from 1 July 2026, how penalty rates work, and the rights every visa holder has.
Key takeaways
- A room attendant is usually a Level 1 guest service grade 1 employee under the Hospitality Award: AUD 26.44 an hour full-time, or AUD 33.05 casual, from 1 July 2026.
- Contract cleaners fall under a different award. A Cleaning Services Award Level 1 employee starts at AUD 27.08 full-time and AUD 33.85 casual.
- Penalty rates are where the money is. A casual cleaner on a Sunday is on AUD 60.93 an hour, and AUD 74.47 on a public holiday.
- Casual loading is 25%, paid instead of annual and sick leave, not on top of it.
- Minimum pay, payslips and 12% superannuation apply to you whatever visa you hold. Fair Work says visa status doesn't reduce your entitlements.
Housekeeping is one of the few jobs in Brisbane that regularly hires people with no Australian qualifications, no local referees and limited English. That makes it a common first job for new arrivals, and it also makes it one of the most underpaid corners of the labour market.
The good news is that the pay floor is written down, published, and the same for everyone. This guide sets out what the Australian awards actually say a Brisbane room attendant or cleaner must be paid from 1 July 2026, how weekend and night loadings change the maths, and which rights follow you regardless of your visa. Every rate below comes from Fair Work Ombudsman pay guides checked in September 2026.
Which award covers your housekeeping job?
This is the first question, and most people get it wrong. Two different awards cover very similar work, and they pay differently.
- If you're employed directly by a hotel, motel, resort or serviced apartment, the Hospitality Industry (General) Award normally applies. Housekeeping sits in the "guest service" classifications.
- If you're employed by a cleaning contractor that services hotels, offices or buildings, the Cleaning Services Award normally applies.
Large hotel groups sometimes have a registered enterprise agreement instead. That agreement replaces the award, but it can't leave you worse off overall than the award would.
Hospitality Award rates for room attendants
Housekeeping duties normally start at guest service grade 1 and rise as supervision and responsibility are added. These are the rates that apply from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026.
| Classification | Full-time / part-time | Casual | Casual Saturday | Casual Sunday | Casual public holiday |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Introductory (first weeks only) | $25.74 | $32.18 | $38.61 | $45.05 | $64.35 |
| Level 1 guest service grade 1 | $26.44 | $33.05 | $39.66 | $46.27 | $66.10 |
| Level 2 guest service grade 2 | $27.08 | $33.85 | $40.62 | $47.39 | $67.70 |
| Level 3 guest service grade 3 | $27.97 | $34.96 | $41.96 | $48.95 | $69.93 |
All figures are AUD per hour. A full-time Level 1 employee is on $1,004.90 for a 38-hour week, which is also the adult national minimum wage set in the 2026 annual wage review. The introductory rate can only be used for a short initial period, not indefinitely.
The award also adds flat hourly amounts for unsociable hours: $2.95 an hour for work between 7pm and midnight Monday to Friday, and $4.42 an hour between midnight and 7am. Early housekeeping starts and late turndown shifts often attract these.
Cleaning Services Award rates
If a contractor employs you, the numbers change, and Sunday is dramatically better.
| Classification | Full-time | Part-time | Casual | Casual Saturday | Casual Sunday | Casual public holiday |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cleaning service employee Level 1 | $27.08 | $31.14 | $33.85 | $47.39 | $60.93 | $74.47 |
| Cleaning service employee Level 2 | $27.97 | $32.17 | $34.96 | $48.95 | $62.93 | $76.92 |
| Cleaning service employee Level 3 | $29.45 | $33.87 | $36.81 | $51.54 | $66.26 | $80.99 |
Two things stand out. Part-time cleaners get a 15% allowance on top of the minimum hourly rate, which is unusual and easy for an employer to overlook. And Sunday under this award is paid at double time for permanent staff, against time and a half under the Hospitality Award.
How penalty rates actually stack up
Penalty rates are expressed as percentages of the base rate, so they scale with your classification.
| When you work | Hospitality, permanent | Hospitality, casual | Cleaning, permanent | Cleaning, casual |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary weekday | 100% | 125% | 100% | 125% |
| Saturday | 125% | 150% | 150% | 175% |
| Sunday | 150% | 175% | 200% | 225% |
| Public holiday | 225% | 250% | 250% | 275% |
Queensland has its own public holiday list, including the Brisbane region's Ekka show day, so a Brisbane roster can hit these rates more often than a national calendar suggests.
What a real week might pay
Say you're a casual Level 1 room attendant in a Brisbane hotel working 25 hours across a week: 15 ordinary weekday hours, 6 on Saturday, 4 on Sunday.
- 15 hours at $33.05 = $495.75
- 6 hours at $39.66 = $237.96
- 4 hours at $46.27 = $185.08
- Gross total: $918.79, an average of about $36.75 an hour
That's before tax, and before superannuation, which is paid on top. It also assumes the hours are there. Casual housekeeping is demand-driven, and a quiet week in a Brisbane hotel can mean 12 hours instead of 25. Budget on your slow weeks, not your good ones.
Allowances people forget to claim
The awards add small payments that add up over a year:
- Split or broken shift allowance (Hospitality Award, permanent staff): $3.69 a day when the gap between periods of work is two to three hours, $5.60 a day when it's longer.
- Laundry allowance for motel employees: $2.46 per uniform laundered, capped at $7.65 a week.
- First aid allowance: $13.43 a week for full-timers, or $2.69 a day for part-time and casual staff up to that weekly cap.
- Overtime meal allowance: $17.42 for permanent staff.
- Leading hand allowance (Cleaning Services Award, Level 2): from $61.73 a week depending on how many staff you supervise.
Your rights apply whatever visa you hold
Fair Work is explicit that visa holders and migrant workers have the same workplace rights as everyone else in Australia, and that it won't cancel your visa for contacting it. In practice, that means:
- Minimum pay. Your employer cannot agree a lower rate with you, and you cannot agree to one either. An agreement below the award has no effect.
- Payslips within one working day of payday, showing hours, rate, gross and net pay, deductions and superannuation.
- Superannuation at 12% of qualifying earnings for 2026–27. From 1 July 2026, employers must pay it each payday instead of quarterly, so it should appear on every payslip.
- No unlawful deductions. Uniform "bonds", training charges and till shortages generally cannot be taken out of your wages.
- Unpaid trial shifts are only lawful for the short time genuinely needed to assess your skills. A full unpaid shift cleaning rooms is not a trial.
Step by step: check you're being paid correctly
- Find your employing entity on your payslip or contract, and confirm whether an award or an enterprise agreement applies.
- Work out your classification. Most new room attendants are guest service grade 1; cleaners are Level 1 unless they operate specialised equipment or supervise.
- Run your own numbers through the Fair Work Pay and Conditions Tool, entering your award, classification, employment type and the date. It is free and authoritative.
- Log every shift yourself — start, finish, unpaid breaks, and the date — in a phone note or a diary.
- Compare your logged hours and the penalty rates against what landed in your account.
- Raise a shortfall in writing with your manager, politely and specifically, naming the shifts and the amounts.
- Escalate to the Fair Work Ombudsman if it isn't fixed. You can ask for help without naming your employer first.
Before you accept a Brisbane housekeeping job
- Get the offer in writing, with the employing company's name and ABN.
- Confirm the award or agreement, your classification and your hourly rate.
- Confirm whether you're casual, part-time or full-time, and what that means for leave.
- Ask how rooms are allocated and whether pay is per hour or per room. Per-room pay must still deliver at least the award hourly rate.
- Ask for your superannuation fund details and give your employer your tax file number.
- Check your work rights and any hour limits on your visa before your first shift.
- Save the Fair Work pay calculator on your phone.
- Never pay anyone for a job, a shift or a reference.
A last word on sponsorship
The pay numbers above carry one more lesson. At $1,004.90 a week, a full-time housekeeping wage lands near AUD 52,000 a year — roughly two thirds of the income floor Home Affairs requires before an employer can nominate someone for a skilled visa. Search the current Core Skills Occupation List for cleaning and housekeeping titles and you will not find them either; the accommodation entries are all management roles. The award rate and the occupation list both rule sponsorship out, which is why offers of it in this industry are almost always worthless.
So the people cleaning Brisbane hotel rooms are on a working holiday, student or partner visa, or are already residents. Our guide to the Australian working holiday visa covers the 417 and 462 rules in detail, the partner visa guide covers the route many people actually use to stay, and if you're aiming at a longer-term move, Australian skilled migration explains which occupations genuinely lead to permanent residence.

Frequently asked questions
How much do housekeepers earn per hour in Brisbane?
Under the Hospitality Award from 1 July 2026, a Level 1 guest service grade 1 employee, which covers most room attendants, is on AUD 26.44 an hour full-time or part-time, and AUD 33.05 as a casual. A contract cleaner under the Cleaning Services Award starts higher, at AUD 27.08 full-time and AUD 33.85 casual. Hotels can pay above the award, but not below it.
Is casual housekeeping work better paid than part-time?
The hourly rate is higher, because casuals get a 25% loading. But that loading replaces paid annual leave, paid sick leave and notice of termination, and casual shifts can be cancelled. Over a year, a part-time employee with steady hours often ends up in a similar or better position.
Do Brisbane hotels pay weekend penalty rates to cleaners?
Yes, if the award or an enterprise agreement applies. A casual room attendant is on AUD 39.66 an hour on Saturday and AUD 46.27 on Sunday under the Hospitality Award. Rates under the Cleaning Services Award are higher again. Check which instrument covers you, because the two differ a lot.
Does my employer have to pay me superannuation on a temporary visa?
Generally yes. The super guarantee is 12% of qualifying earnings for 2026–27, and from 1 July 2026 employers must pay it on each payday rather than quarterly. Temporary residents can usually claim it back after leaving Australia.
What do I do if I'm being underpaid in a Brisbane hotel?
Keep your own record of every shift, compare it against the Fair Work pay calculator, and raise it in writing with your employer. If that goes nowhere, contact the Fair Work Ombudsman. Fair Work says it won't cancel your visa for asking it for help.
